Thanks for your interest in learning about the history and catalyst for On Time Air Filters. See that picture of us over there on the right?  Yep. That's us.


We spend as much time as we can outside, walking on paths, climbing on rocks, watching our high-speed English Setter run for miles in pursuit of birds.  We understand that we're tiny specks in the scheme of things; we're slightly bigger than we look in that thumbnail image, but even in actual size, we appreciate that we are not going to make a major environmental impact on our own. Still, undaunted, we try to make small differences to ensure that the hikes we love stay gorgeous, and green, and as stable as possible for the hikers that will follow us.  We stalk our friends and grab bottles out of their hands before they toss them in the trash; we walk the extra steps to recycle them; we structure our lives so we can walk or bike almost everywhere; when we can't, we take metro; and when we forget our bags at the grocery store, we look for the least gross ones in the plastic recycling barrel at the store.


It's not much, but it's an effort, and strangely, if you've read this far you know that small things in the aggregate do matter.  Small stands on tiny things are contagious. We didn't create On Time Air Filters to save the world. We built it out of a wish to found a nice, successful business that helps people save time, money, and take marginal steps toward keeping their home air clean and their environment green. Oh, and we also found that this business is one of those V-8 kind of ideas. It's not revolution, but at the same time, you can't imagine that it hasn't been available for years. Because in addition to being net neutral or perhaps net positive for the home and broader environment, we hope that On Time Air Filters solves a problem. For you.

The "Duh, this is so Obvious" Moment that Led to OTAF

Does this sound familiar?


1)  If you own your own home, you probably have at least one air conditioning or heating unit. Most of those units require home air filters. To make it more complicated, if you have more than one filter in your home, they are inevitably different sizes.

2)  Your life is busy. You have work to do, kids to care for, dinner to cook, dishes to wash, sports to watch, friends to connect with, and the occasional hour of sleep to catch up on. Then there are all the things you should be doing, but just don’t have the time for, like flossing—or replacing your home air filters.

3)  Oops! You forgot to replace your air filters. If you’re wondering why your utility bills are higher than they used to be, a dirty filter might be the culprit. And that’s a best-case scenario. Dirty filters reduce air quality and increase the harmful effects of asthma, allergies, odors, and other airborne irritants. About the OTAF team

Mark Leffers, Co-Founder and President

Mark Leffers is a finance and accounting professional providing consulting services to non-profit organizations and real estate developers with respect to subsidized affordable housing and low-income housing tax credit project analysis, structure, finance and acquisition. Mr. Leffers also operates a consulting practice providing technical accounting analysis and valuation services related to complex financing structures encompassing embedded derivative features, and development of highly sophisticated stochastic financial, cash flow forecast and securitization models for consumer finance and intellectual property assets.


Previously, Mr. Leffers provided asset management and financial analysis services to GCL Holdings, LLC, a federal bankruptcy court supervised owner of subsidized multifamily housing. Mr. Leffers was a certified public accountant for over 20 years and served as Audit Senior Manager with Reznick Group, P.A., a national public accounting firm specializing in real state and multifamily housing. Mr. Leffers’ client base included tax credit syndicators, real estate developers, not-for-profit organizations and both public and nonpublic commercial businesses.


Prior to joining Reznick, Mr. Leffers organized and launched Royal Oak, LLC, Washington, DC and New York-based investment bank with a partner to invest in, and actively manage, startup and financially distressed companies. The firm also provided substantial business advisory services in the areas of reorganization, business and financial planning, and corporate structuring. Mr. Leffers was primarily responsible for valuation, capital structuring and restructuring, budgeting and forecasting, due diligence review, and related financial functions, including accounting system installation, for all projects. He also worked with national auditing firms, attorneys (SEC, sports marketing, bankruptcy, corporate) and other professionals to facilitate financing of each enterprise and served as de facto financial manager for most firm clients and served as treasurer, chief financial officer and controller for the firm’s portfolio companies.


Mr. Leffers holds a B.S. degree in Commerce (accounting concentration) from the University of Virginia.


Sue Heilbronner, Co-Founder and Marketing Advisor

Sue Heilbronner has been at the forefront of direct marketing since the early years of the internet. She currently serves as the Chief Marketing Officer of Campus Direct, Inc., a leading direct marketing firm in the online education sector.


Previously, she was president of, the largest online writing community in the world. Backed by Greylock Partners and Vertex, WEbook is leading the convergence between the Internet and publishing by creating a new category: Community-Sourced Books.


Earlier in her career, Ms. Heilbronner was executive vice president of sales and marketing at TIG Global, the leading provider of interactive marketing services in the hospitality industry. She drove TIG Global to repeated annual sales increases in excess of 150-200%, resulting in the company being named the 10th fastest growing firm in the DC region.


Before joining TIG Global, Ms. Heilbronner served as executive director of business development with Discovery Communications. First, she led business development for the education vertical within She then built Discovery’s licensing initiatives by forging over 100 successful partnerships with national companies for the distribution of licensed goods and services under Discovery’s recognized TV brands.


Prior to joining Discovery, Ms. Heilbronner founded and built and sold a successful e-commerce company. She began her career as an attorney--working last as a federal prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice.


Ms. Heilbronner received a bachelor’s degree in government from Oberlin College and both a law degree and a master’s degree in public policy from Duke University.


Barry Schwartz, Technical Guru

Barry Schwartz is the CEO of RustyBrick, a New York Web service firm specializing in customized online technology that helps companies decrease costs and increase sales. RustyBrick sells custom web software including advanced e-commerce, custom content management systems, social networking sites, CRM applications, custom web-based business software, iPhone applications and much more.


Barry Schwartz is the founder of the Search Engine Roundtable and has covered search for over five years. Barry is also the News Editor at Danny Sullivan's Search Engine Land.
